Rosie Lowe & Duval Timothy’s Passion for Musical Adventurism Is Beautiful to Behold on Stunning ‘Son’ | Album Review

With a shared penchant for experimentation and boundary-pushing, kindred musical spirits Rosie Lowe and Duval Timothy have joined creative forces for their imaginative new collaborative project Son. Recorded by the duo in London and Freetown, Sierra Leone and accompanied by an illustrated children’s book, the tightly constructed 9-song set is brief in its 20-minute duration, but it’s nevertheless a sonically immersive and inspired affair.

“We were interested in bringing our surroundings into the recordings; leaving doors open, recording in different spaces and locations, inviting the listener to experience the life that was going on around us whilst capturing the process,” the pair explain in an official statement.

An intriguing, inventive symbiosis of multiple vocal layers and sonic elements undergirded by Timothy’s emotive piano arrangements, Son demands repeated and attentive listening to uncover the breadth and depth of its many musical charms. Though designed to be listened to in its entirety from beginning to end (preferably with background-noise cancelling headphones for full effect), the standout moments include the ambient title track “Son,” the absorbing “Always,” and the uplifting “Say.”

For those who may still be unfamiliar with Lowe and Timothy’s musical pedigree, it’s highly recommended to explore the former’s first two albums (2016’s Control and 2019’s YU) along with the latter’s Sen Am (2017) and Help (2020).
