“The stage is a place where I can be wholly myself,” Florence Welch confided to London’s Evening Standard back in 2012. “Even though you’re in front of people almost to be judged, it is a place without judgement. I have this sensation of being in flight all the time, but being on stage is like creating a sanctuary in which you can completely lose yourself. The bits of your personality that you keep under wraps in ordinary life, you can let them run free.”
Indeed. If you’ve ever had the good fortune of witnessing the enchanting Welch and her bandmates perform live, you can surely appreciate the unique mix of escapism and euphoria they embody and offer in droves to their audience. Not to mention the sterling repertoire of songs they’ve cultivated across their three wonderful studio albums to date.
Broadcast yesterday evening, Florence + The Machine recently graced the Austin City Limits stage as part of the series’ 42nd season. Available to stream now, the episode features the band’s performances of a trio of songs from their 2015 album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful (“Delilah,” “Queen of Peace,” “What Kind of Man”), as well as “The Dog Days are Over” from their 2009 debut Lungs and “Shake It Out” from 2011’s Ceremonials. Last night’s episode also includes soulful songstress Andra Day’s performance of songs from her Grammy Award-nominated 2015 debut LP Cheers to the Fall.
