Released back in February, KING’s debut album We Are KING is one of the most sublime recordings we’ve had the pleasure of hearing this year. Yesterday, fresh off concluding the European leg of their current tour, the L.A. based trio of Anita Bias and twin sisters Amber and Paris Strother visited perennial tastemaker Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 6 studio to discuss their origins and the inspirations (Cocteau Twins, Earth, Wind & Fire, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Prince) behind their uniquely addictive, refined brand of soul. Peterson also premiered the threesome’s new Robert Glasper collaboration “Song for Selim,” lifted from the forthcoming Glasper-helmed collection of reimagined Miles Davis compositions, Everything’s Beautiful, due May 27th.
Appointment listening for the Albumism team each week, Peterson’s latest three-hour broadcast also includes an eclectic array of delectable tracks from the likes of Duke Ellington, J Dilla, Herbie Hancock, Terrace Martin, Gregory Porter, and Romare, among many others.
