Words like “ethereal,” “blissful,” and “dreamy” will be used ceaselessly to describe Jessie Ware’s newly unveiled single “Midnight” in the coming days and weeks, but none of these terms can adequately convey the breadth of the London-bred singer-songwriter’s vocal purity.
What starts out as a sensuous, bedroom ballad with bewitching synthesizers emerges as a smooth, retro jam with echoes of Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets” heavily steeped in its grooves. The exotic atmosphere, lush sonics, and romantic lyricism powerfully capture the way love and imagination can transport us. “Whenever you’re around I’m lifted, so lifted,” Ware exudes with so much warmth. “This moment is made for you and I to go higher!”
With “Midnight” delivering the first knockout blow, Ware’s forthcoming third studio album—the highly anticipated follow-up to 2014's Tough Love—will likely send fans into ecstasy, critics into raptures, and her competitors back to the drawing board upon its release date.
Ware premiered the single during an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac last week, and we encourage you to enjoy both below.
