A long twelve years have passed since the release of De La Soul’s last proper studio album, 2004’s criminally maligned The Grind Date. But their devoted fans’ patience will be rewarded and then some in just a few months. Last year, the legendary hip-hop group astonished the hip-hop world with the announcement of their eagerly-awaited, Kickstarter-crowdfunded new album and the Anonymous Nobody…. And after a few recording delays, the LP is officially due August 26th.
To give their fans another slice of what they’ve cooked up, the group has debuted the upcoming album’s first single “Pain,” which features the irresistible rhymes of their fellow hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg. Although they’ve previously offered their fans a delicious sampling of what’s in store with the four-track EP For Your Pain & Suffering, the new single “Pain” will surely have De La heads ready to soak up the group’s unparalleled knack for eclecticism, witty lyricism, and thoughtful expression once again.
The track shines with a vintage summery groove, largely reminiscent of She’s Strange-era Cameo, hovering over the group’s ultra-positive and warm, socially-conscious sentiments that are sure to make everyone’s day brighter. Snoop Dogg delivers a generous verse that greatly compliments the song as well.
While no concrete details about the song’s music video have surfaced, we suspect that the legendary collective have something amazing lined up in the near future.
Stream the delectable “Pain” below, and get ready for the full entrée on August 26.
