Nearly 12 years have passed since the legendary Native Tongues trio De La Soul released their last proper studio album, 2004’s criminally underappreciated The Grind Date. But much to the collective delight of hip-hop heads worldwide, Posdnuos, Maseo & Dave are just a few months away from unveiling their highly-anticipated, Kickstarter-crowdfunded new album and the Anonymous Nobody..., due August 26th.
Rumored to feature guest contributions from the likes of Damon Albarn, David Byrne, Estelle, Little Dragon, Pete Rock, Snoop Dogg and Usher, among others, De La’s forthcoming long player promises to be—as Dave explained to Ambrosia for Heads—“a breath of fresh air that does not sound like anything out there.”
The new album was originally slated to arrive yesterday, April 29th, but the group has acknowledged that they need additional time to place the finishing touches upon what promises to be one of 2016’s most intriguing recordings. No timetable for perfection, right?
In order to reward their fans’ patience, the group has unveiled a 4-track EP entitled For Your Pain & Suffering, which features music and skits from the and the Anonymous Nobody... recording sessions, as well as cuts that didn’t make the, er, final cut for the album.
In an exclusive video statement addressed to the album’s Kickstarter patrons, which includes the Albumism team, Dave explained, “Alright, well, the release date for this album is August 26th. You guys are gonna get this project. Yes. Finally, it'll be in your...whatever it is...iPad, iPhone, car system, whatever you're going to be able to bump this record. This summer, our first single, featuring Snoop Dogg, entitled ‘Pain.’ Y'all will be checkin’ that out, and the video will be coming with that as well. We're just so happy to get you guys this music, finally. We know you're going to enjoy it, so again, thank you for your support all the way through.”
Stream For Your Pain & Suffering below, and be sure to mark your calendars for August 26th.
