A few months removed from releasing his excellent eighth studio album Love In Beats, UK soul trailblazer Omar Lye-Fook has shared a new video for the sublime single “Gave My Heart.” One of the standout tracks on the standout-heavy long player, the track is dedicated to the memory of the late music legend Leon Ware, who passed away at age 77 this past February. A revered songwriter, producer and performer, Ware collaborated with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Teena Marie, Bobby Womack, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, and Maxwell, among many others, during his prolific career.
“Gave My Heart” features Ware’s vocals, as well as sonic elements from his 1981 single “Rockin’ You Eternally” from the album of the same name. Directed by Mohamed Khelifa, the accompanying visuals include footage of Omar grooving along a sun-drenched Bali beach juxtaposed with archived clips of Ware and him on stage together.
“I was blessed to know Leon for over 23 years, and what I remember most is the laughter,” Omar has explained. “The musician was a bonus to experience, so the fact he allowed me and my brother to create a song with one of his creations was such an honour, and to think it may have been one of his last releases fills me with pride.”
