As we highlighted yesterday, Gilles Peterson recently celebrated the rich musical heritage of Bristol, the birthplace of trip-hop, on his weekly BBC Radio 6 radio show. So apropos, then, that Massive Attack, one of Bristol’s (and more broadly, the UK’s) most influential groups of all time, unveiled their first new music in nearly six years today. What’s more, lead single “Take It There” from the legendary trio’s new Ritual Spirit EP features former group member and Bristol icon in his own right, Tricky.
The first official release since 2010’s Heligoland album, the 4-track Ritual Spirit is produced by the group’s 3D and includes additional contributions from Azekel, Roots Manuva, and Young Fathers, who won the prestigious Mercury Prize for their 2014 debut LP, Dead. Ritual Spirit represents just the first of three planned Massive Attack releases in 2016, another Ep and a full-length album are both on the horizon.
Listen to Ritual Spirit below, and stay tuned for even more new music from Massive Attack in the months to come.
