One of the Albumism team’s most beloved LPs from 2015 was Cool Uncle, the self-titled retro-soul debut album from the dynamic duo of legendary crooner Bobby Caldwell and revered songwriter/producer Jack Splash. Admittedly an unorthodox pairing upon first glance, the creative collaboration between the two gentlemen resulted in one of the most inspired and rewarding efforts we’ve heard in recent memory.
Beyond showcasing the many talents of its creators, Cool Uncle featured stellar contributions from a handful of artists including Mayer Hawthorne, Jessie Ware, Deniece Williams, and CeeLo Green. The latter lends his golden vocals to the group’s latest quiet storm indebted single “Mercy,” the video for which debuted this week by way of the good folks over at Pitchfork. In the cleverly executed four-minute clip, the trio is transformed into claymation figures who perform from within a cage, while various zoo animals observe and mock them, relishing the welcome role reversal.
Check out the video below, and be sure to give Cool Uncle a proper listen, if you haven’t already.
