One week away from their scheduled Super Bowl 50 halftime show gig (February 7), Coldplay and Beyoncé have shared vibrant new visuals for their recent collaboration “Hymn for the Weekend,” the second single from the band’s BRIT Award nominated album, A Head Full of Dreams. Filmed on location in Mumbai, the video features footage of Chris Martin traversing the city juxtaposed with clips of the paint-drenched band performing among groups of local children. Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor also makes a cameo appearance in the Ben Mor directed clip.
Though released just yesterday, the video has already inspired widespread ire among those who believe the imagery’s appropriation of Indian culture treads too far into exploitative territory, rife with lazy stereotypes. In parallel, however, some observers and media outlets have suggested that such criticisms are unwarranted.
